Mindfulness and Compassion Based Therapies


Mindfulness-based approaches are designed to intentionally focus one’s attention on the present moment in a manner that is non-judgmental. The practice requires that one intentionally directs focus away from states of mind that cause distress or otherwise distract from the present such as fear or worrisome thoughts. Mindfulness encourages non-judgment, observation and acceptance of one’s experience or present situation. It invites greater ease and calm. Mindfulness based therapies relieve the symptoms of psychological stress, negative mental and emotional states and physical pain.

Compassion-based approaches are central at CMBH and the foundation of emotional healing. Compassion allows us to be aware in the present moment when we’re struggling with difficult feelings such as fear, shame, anger, sadness, anxiety and respond with kindness, compassion, and understanding. This includes being with difficult emotions, and with ourselves, in a loving and accepting way, allowing for greater ease in dealing with difficult emotions or situations and increasing our overall sense of well-being.

Specific approaches offered at CMBH include:

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidenced-based cognitive-behavioural treatment developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan and designed specifically to help individuals who experience intense and unpredictable emotions. Difficulty managing painful emotions can underlie problems with impulsive behaviours and conflict in interpersonal relationships. DBT uses acceptance-based and cognitive behavioural strategies that help individuals effectively regulate emotional experience and behaviours effectively. Originally designed for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, DBT is an effective treatment for a variety of other mental health issues such as eating disorders, chronic depression, anger problems and substance use disorders.

DBT offers four main capacities to bring about change:

  • Mindfulness
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Distress Tolerance

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Leslie Greenberg and colleagues, is an empirically-based approach that helps people strengthen their emotional intelligence and develop secure relationships. EFT sees emotions as information centers, not to be controlled but to be listened to and worked with. Emotions are a guide to what we want or need and when understood and worked with effectively, can lead to personal growth and meaningful relationships. EFT focuses on helping people become aware of and express their emotions effectively, learn to tolerate and regulate them, and reflect upon and make sense of their emotional experience. The development of a strong and safe therapeutic relationship, combined with experiential exercises, is at the core of an EFT approach. EFT is both an individual and couples therapy.

EFT Couple’s Therapy is focused on helping couples develop a positive, meaningful and connected relationship. EFT helps couples repair injury or hurt and work through difficulties in ways that strengthen their emotional bond and connection. EFT also focuses on increasing mutual empathy in a couple and to recognize/respond quickly and with care when a rupture within a relationship is experienced.

Therapeutic Rhythm & Mindfulness (TRMTM) is an innovative approach combining group drumming, mindfulness and emotion-focused awareness to cultivate presence.  TRM™ is designed by Dr. Shari Geller to increase positivity, vitality and connectedness while reducing distress and mood disturbance. It is helpful for people with a variety of physical and emotional challenges such as cancer, terminal illness, chronic pain, depression and anxiety.

TRM™ is also aimed for health care providers, educators and anyone in the field of helping for cultivating presence and self-care. It enhances personal growth, group empowerment and over-all health.
