The Cultivation of Therapeutic Presence
Therapeutic Presence (TP) is the foundation for effective therapy across different therapeutic approaches. TP involves being completely in the moment on a multiplicity of levels, physically, emotionally, cognitively, and relationally. TP helps therapists to skillfully attune to one’s self while being attuned to others. TP involves being grounded in one’s self, while being open and immersed in what is poignant in the moment with a larger sense of spaciousness. This grounded, immersed and expanded awareness is offered in service of another’s healing; it is viewed as the essential foundation to developing a positive and healthy therapeutic relationship. A therapist’s presence creates a neurobiological experience of safety for the client which allows them to become more present and accepting with themselves and in their relationships. It also facilitates engagement in effective therapeutic work. In this training, participants develop a theoretical and experiential understanding of an empirically-based model of therapeutic presence, as well as exploring how mindfulness practice helps to remove barriers to presence and deepen the state of therapeutic presence. This workshop also can be offered using the Therapeutic Rhythm and Mindfulness (TRM™) program.
Self-Care for the Health Care Professional: Rhythm and Mindfulness as tools for Balance, Health and Well-being
Gather with other psychologists, therapists and health care professionals to focus on self-nourishment and soul-nourishment. As therapists, we are acutely aware of the costs of giving to others as well as the need to take care of ourselves. Yet, we are often too busy with our practice, our lives, families, and other responsibilities to take enough time to nourish or tune-up our greatest tool, ourselves. This is an opportunity to explore the fine balance of service to others with service to self, using tools such as drumming and meditation. This workshop will offer an experiential exploration of drumming, sound and meditation as tools to enhance health, balance and vitality. Drumming has been empirically validated to reduce stress, reduce burnout, increase immune functioning, balance mood states and increase overall health and wellness. Mindfulness meditation has also been found to reduce stress, enhance well-being and increase inner acceptance and presence. This group will be experiential in nature and is geared towards therapists and health-care practitioners. NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE needed in meditation or drumming.
