Working with Emotions in Psychotherapy
This workshop will offer a hands-on approach to working with emotions with your clients. Emotions provide us with information on our experience and needs and can reveal a direction for how to grow. Working with emotions with clients may include how to activate and regulate, depending on the level of arousal our clients are experiencing. Working with emotions in the therapist is also valuable in allowing us to read what is occurring in the moment as well as how to calm and center and become present when feeling with our clients’ experience. In the therapy relationship, emotions can reveal what is occurring moment to moment; being aware can allow for a continued strengthening in the relationship. Leaders in Emotion Focused Therapy (Leslie Greenberg), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (Shelley McMain) and Therapeutic Presence (Shari Geller) will share their views on working effectively with emotions in the client, therapist, and relationship. Perspectives will be illuminated with clinical examples, video clips and emergent discussion.
