About the Workshop
Empathy is a process common to all forms of therapy, but also the secret ingredient in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), underlying the process of chair work and other tasks. Therapist empathy is both under-rated and essential; simple and complex; seemingly obvious and ambiguous at the same time. Empathy is something that most folks believe they naturally have already; however, we often find it to be challenging, subtle, and elusive. At times, our empathy seems miraculous and even life changing, both for our clients and for us. And yet, there are times where our attempts at being empathic are restricted, wooden, and disappointing. What makes the difference?
In two half-days, this workshop will begin to unpack the empathic attunement process in psychotherapy, with special relevance to EFT practice. Day 1 will begin with a conceptual framework for understanding therapist empathy, along with the famous Opening Channels of Receptivity exercise. This will provide a foundation for going further with empathic attunement. On Day 2, an overview of the rich variety of empathic responses will be provided, followed by a closer look at two therapist responses that are essential for developing and expressing emotion-focused empathy: evocative reflection and empathic affirmation. The training will be supported with brief lectures, video examples, and skill practice.
